The Hanging Umbrella Man and Woman in Prague

The Umbrella Man

Prague is known for its Gothic cathedrals, cobblestone alleys, and historic landmarks. But beyond the famous attractions, the city hides whimsical artworks that surprise you when you least expect them. One such hidden gem is the pair of statues known as the Umbrella Man and Umbrella Woman, suspended high above the streets of Old Town.☂

The Floating Figures

Look up along Husova Street and you’ll see them:

  • The Umbrella Man – a suited gentleman, holding a briefcase in one hand and clutching a bright red umbrella with the other, as if caught in mid-air.

  • The Umbrella Woman – dressed in a skirt and jacket, holding tightly to a yellow umbrella, floating just across from him.

Together, the two sculptures look like everyday people swept up by the wind, drifting above Prague’s rooftops.

The Artist and What It Symbolizes

Both statues are the creation of Czech sculptor Michal Trpák. His work, Slight Uncertainty, evokes whimsy and contemplation. Trpák uses surreal everyday scenes to challenge our perception of reality, and here, they invite us to pause, look up, and reflect on life’s delicate balance and hidden wonders.

Visitors often interpret the scene as a delicate balance grasping for stability in uncertain times or life’s fragile beauty and the human longing to rise above challenges with grace, humor, and a touch of fantasy.
