Our Road Trip to Croatia: A Journey with Our Dog

Traveling to Croatia by car was an unforgettable adventure, made even more special because we brought our small dog along. Since flying wasn’t an option, we decided to take the scenic route, making the most of the journey and stopping along the way.

First Stop: Graz, Austria

Leaving Prague in the morning, we set off on our road trip, making our way through the Czech and Austrian countryside. The drive was smooth, with well-maintained highways and beautiful scenery along the way. Since we didn’t want to do the whole journey in one go, we planned an overnight stop in Graz, Austria.

Graz turned out to be a charming city with a laid-back atmosphere. We checked into a pet-friendly hotel and took our dog for a walk around the historic Old Town. The Schlossberg Hill offered stunning views of the city, and we even managed to enjoy a cozy dinner at an outdoor restaurant that welcomed pets.

Crossing into Croatia

The next morning, we continued our drive towards Novigrad, Croatia. Crossing the border was straightforward, though we made sure to have all our documents ready, including our dog’s pet passport. Since Croatia is in the EU but not part of Schengen, there was a brief check, but everything went smoothly.

Once we entered Croatia, the landscape changed—rolling hills gave way to the stunning coastline, and we could feel the Mediterranean breeze as we approached the sea.

Arriving in Novigrad

After hours on the road, we finally reached Novigrad, a picturesque coastal town on the Istrian Peninsula. The town had a relaxed vibe, with narrow cobbled streets, colorful houses, and breathtaking sea views. The best part? Novigrad was incredibly pet-friendly! Our dog enjoyed the long walks along the marina and even got to dip his paws in the sea.

We spent our days exploring local markets, indulging in fresh seafood, and taking in the stunning sunsets over the Adriatic. The highlight of the trip was visiting the Novigrad City Walls and enjoying a peaceful moment by the water.

Tips for Traveling to Croatia by Car with a Pet

  • Plan pet-friendly accommodations in advance to ensure a smooth stay.
  • Check pet travel requirements, including an EU pet passport and up-to-date vaccinations.
  • Take breaks during long drives to keep your pet comfortable.
  • Be prepared for toll roads in Austria and Croatia—have some cash or a credit card handy.

Our road trip to Croatia was not just about reaching the destination but about the experiences along the way. From wandering through Graz to soaking in the seaside charm of Novigrad, every moment was worth it. Traveling by car gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace, and having our dog with us made the journey even more special.

Would we do it again? Absolutely!
